| my brother and I had an argument about a word in an old song we used to sing when we were little. it took me about one minute to find it on your side and the discussion ended. | Searching for some hymn text, I came up with this excellent site and the source of the text. I was trying to translate my great-grandmother's German language obituary from a local paper in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, which included a verse from a Lutheran hymn. Prior to the 1930s [and a little later], Milwaukee's older German community didn't bother with the English language papers.

| Diese Seite ist zum Thema traditionals/Volkslieder das absolut Beste, was es derzeit im Netz zu finden gibt. Ich bin darauf gestoßen, weil ich derzeit an einem Projekt arbeite, gerade deutsches traditionelles Liedgut musikalisch zu modernisieren und auch jüngeren Menschen wieder zugänglich zu machen. Hier gibt es in unserem Land immer noch ein großes Defizit. Das Thema Lieder im 3. Reich sollte man sicher sensibel behandeln, aber nur weil die Nationalsozialisten sich gerne und reichlich beim deutschen Liedgut bedienten, heißt das noch lange nicht, dass sie die Erfinder dieser Lieder waren. Ein "Horst-Wessel-Lied" beispielsweise ist selbstverständlich Nazi-Schund, den es entsprechend als solchen zu ächten gilt. Also, auch die Glatze existierte lange vor dem Erscheinen der Neonazis auf der Bildfläche.

| I have been looking for the lyrics to a certain song for years it seems -- I typed in "and a visiting migrant swan", as this was one of the funny lines that I had heard on BBC-TV in 1973 when I first heard this song -- which I guess is common in Europe, but nobody knows it in America. Well, yours was the first site that came up, & there it is!!: "The Bantam Cock" -- so happy to finally be able to read it all without my laughter drowning out the lyrics. Thankyou very much!
