A wise old owl lived in an oak

Melody -

A wise old owl lived in an oak;
The more he saw the less he spoke;
The less he spoke the more he heard.
Why can't we all be like that wise old bird?

Believed to be an old rhyme, though not found before the First World War. It was quoted by American millionaire John D. Rockefeller, September 1915, when questioned about a War Loan from America to the Allies. President Calvin Coolidge had the words inscribed over the fireplace of his home.
