Like 'Blow the Wind Southerly' and 'When the Boat Comes in', 'Bobby Shaftoe' is a Northumbrian folk song which has become well known far beyond that county's borders. Folklorists have noted that in performance the hero's name is invariably pronounced 'Shafty'.
