The Burma Road was China's lifeline to the outside world during the Second World War. Hundreds of workers pulled the iron rollers with their bare hands as the road snaked across the mountainous terrain of northern Burma into China. The song was composed by Nieh Erh, who also composed "The Marching Song of the Volunteers," which later became the national anthem of the Peoples' Republic of China. The song begins and ends with the chant of the laborers. |
