La Marcha Granadera o Marcha Real quizá sea el´único himno nacional que no tiene letra. Ha habido intentos de ponérsela y se han realizado, sin éxito, y ninguno de ellos fue adoptado como oficial. En el reinado de Alfonso XIII le hizo una letra el autor teatral Luis Marquina, pero no cuajó. Himno de Riego fue el himno nacional durante la II República (1931-1939); no tiene nada que ver con la otra. Durante la dictadura de Franco le hizo una letra el escritor José María Pemán, muy acorde con los gustos políticos de la época. Empezaba así: Gloria a España, alzad los brazos, hijos del pueblo español . . . ." Esta letra, aunque se cantó un tiempo en las escuelas, fue abandonada cuando la dictadura de Franco dejó su pasado fascista para tratar de acercarse a Estados Unidos y Europa. Actualmente no se usa ninguna letra.

The Royal March may be the only national hymn that has no words. There have been attempts to put words to it but none have been successful, and none of them was officially adopted. King Alfonso XIII had lyrics written by the theatrical author Luis Marquina, but it didn't work out. During the second republic 1931-1939 a different anthem, by Rafael del Riego, was in use. During his dictatorship Franco had writer José María Pemán pen lyrics in agreement with the political policies of the time. They began: "Glory to Spain, raise your arms, children of Spain . . . ." These verses, although sung for a time in the schools, were abandoned when Franco's dictatorship left its Fascist past to try to come closer to United States and Europe. At the moment no words are used.
